National Open swimmers achieve great results

Arena Swim Club sent 6 athletes through to the National Championships conducted in Sydney over the last week. This championship doubled as the selection meet for the FINA World Championships to be conducted in Shanghai. The level of competition to make semi finals and finals was fierce as athletes strove for national team selection.

The athletes that made the trip for the 8 day competition were Bobby Jovanovich (21), Gianna Leone (19), Jason Dickinson (18), Rhiannon Dielesen (18), Kacey O’Connell (17) and Ben Lindsay (17) all of whom Arena Swim Club very well, securing 2 Finals appearances, 7 Semi-Final swims and 15 personal best performances.

This was a great meet for our athletes, they showed the maturity and determination that is required at this level of competition. They took a significant step forward in their development and are looking to learn from the experiences of the week, get into some hard work as they begin preparations for the winter short course season, and ultimately the Olympic Trials next year.

Junior Program – Important Information

Hi all,

Those involved in the junior program would have noticed a few changes of swimmers in different groups in the last weeks and this will continue as we want to settle the program towards a greater development for all swimmers.

Since I have been back last year we have been trialling the Arena Joondalup Learn to Swim programme Level 8 and 9 students swimming with Junior Squad members of the Arena Squad Programme. From this we will be permanently changing the structure of the Learn to Swim programme, moving all Level 8 and 9 swimmers into the Junior Squad programme from Term 2.

What this means for your child.

  • From the beginning of Term 2 all Level 8 and 9 swimmers will make the transition to the Junior Squad programme.
  • Training sessions offered will remain six days a week, giving you the option to select sessions that suit your busy family.
  • Swimmers in Arena Junior Squads will work towards achieving defined competitive target goals.
  • All swimmers who enrol in the Junior Squad programme will receive a squad swim cap (while stocks last).
  • We are going to aim for the 11 year olds to move into the Junior Gold Squad as soon as possible with the mind of joining the Arena Swim Club and move towards its competitive pathway.
  • For 12 year olds we are developing a further extension to the current junior program so that there is the pathway to the ASC competitive stream.  This will be initiated into the program as the junior program develops.
  • To complement all the above for the 12 year olds and older swimmers we currently have in the junior program the AST program aims to improve swimmers who do surf swimming, triathlon training, lifesaving skills or general fitness for football, netball and any other type of sport you are playing or just get fitter.

We understand that this programme is a change to the way your child swims, and it may take time to settle into the new structure. We are confident that this will build upon the successes the Arena swim club has made in becoming the premier swim club in WA for the past 2 seasons.

Please do not hesitate to discuss your child’s swimming with me if required.

Please e-mail your questions regarding Junior Squad to:

Introduction to SWA Online Entry System

Emails have been sent out to all members advising of their usernames and password.  If you have not received an email with these details, please advise the Registrar via email.

Please be aware that this form of entry begins with the SWA Club Sprint Champs.  The meets page will be updated in time to reflect which events will be using this SWA online entry procedure.  It will also display the closing date as shown in the Almanac.

Swimming WA has been working on an ‘On-Line’ entry system that will be introduced for the 2010/2011 Long Course Season. The ‘On-Line’ entry system uses times that have been uploaded into the National Australia Results database, so essentially once this system is up and running, swimmers will only be able to use official times that have been achieved at Interstate and State endorsed swim meets.

Volunteer Agreement

In order to ensure that volunteer duties for our Friday night Race Sessions and those allocated to Arena Swim Club by Swimming WA and other meet hosting clubs are fulfilled, it has become necessary to institute a Volunteer agreement in line with the 2010/2011 Membership Renewal/enrollment process.

The signed Agreement has to be returned together with the Membership Enrollment form and annual payment.

Failure to return the signed  Volunteer agreement will result in your 2010/2011 Membership Renewal not been processed.

Arena Membership Swipe Cards, Pool Entry and Use of the Club Room

Valid Swipe Card

All swimmers are required to have a current membership swipe card to enter the pool.

Effective from Monday 31 May 2010, Venues West has advised that you will not be granted access to the pool for training if you do not have a current valid swipe card. You will be required to pay the pool entry fee to access the pool.

Swimmers – please do not kick the gate to open the pool as this will result in you being refused entry.

If you have monthly training fees direct debited to credit card or bank account, please ensure that reception is advised of any changes to account details as they arise to ensure that your swipe card remains valid.

Improper Use of Emergency Exits

Swimmers – you are reminded not to enter or exit the pool via the emergency exits. You have been advised on a  number of occasions in the past that this practice is unacceptable. Venues West has advised that should this practice continue, individuals will be barred from the from the pool for an extended time.

Club Room Office

This room is a shared space and used by Venues West for a number of purposes. Arena Swim Club has access to the room during training periods and race sessions. Swimmers should not be in this room unless they have a sound reason ( ie: homework).

Over the past two months, swimmers gear bags and food stuff has been left scattered across the room following morning training sessions.  This is contributing to a problem with vermin within the centre and the office. Club committee members have had to return to the pool during the day to clean up the mess left behind by swimmers.

The outcome:  Venues West is pushing to ban all swimmers from the room outside of training hours; and then access will only be allowed under direct supervision of coaching staff or a parent.

The club has given an assurance to Venues West that the office will be kept clean and tidy. To assist with this, the club is investigating storage solutions to help with the cleanliness of the room and storage of swim bags and sealed food containers.

Swimmers – If you use this room in the mornings, or for homework in the afternoon, please ensure that;

  • all food stuffs/scraps/crumbs are cleaned up before you leave the room;
  • all rubbish is placed in the bin; and
  • all swimming gear, clothing and shoes are stored in a closed sports bag and stored neatly under the bench in the room.

Thank you
