CHICKEN POX (Varicella Xoster Virus)

Australia

A common, highly contagious, acute viral infection of the skin. Symptoms include itchy pustules and scabs.

Transmission: Chicken pox is acquired by inhaling virus-containing particles in tiny droplets released into the air from the nose and throat of an infected person.

Incubation period: Between 7-23 days.

Infectious period: Usually prior to a rash appearing which makes it difficult to diagnose prior to symptoms appearing. Scabs may remain infectious if they lift off the skin.

Exclusion: Exclude until day after all pustules have scabbed over.

Treatment: Treatment is to minimize fever and discomfort by cool bathing in Pinetarsol to help reduce itching and covering lesions in calamine lotion.

Please do not send your child to swimming until after the pustules have scabbed over.

Thank you for helping us to deal with this matter.
